What is editing?
Editing is the art of making a piece of media viewable. Over the years since the first black and white sound less movies to the huge High Definition movies of today editing has evolved greatly. Editing in today’s world is used on movies, television shows, and in classroom projects. Editing is defined as changing a piece of media from its original state. Editing has gone from cutting and gluing little slips of film by hand to placing scenes and sounds in different areas on a computer screen. With today’s technology editing is no longer limited to motion pictures, now we can edit pictures, drawings, music and music videos.
Editing is known as the invisible art in movies today. It is called the invisible art because often time’s you cannot see when the editor made a cut in the movie from one scene to another or one camera angle to another. A movie can be great based on the script or the directions of the director but editing is what makes the movie great to the masses that are going to see it in theaters or own it at home. Many directors agree that the movie is really made in the editing room, not on the set of the movie. When editing the editor picks and chooses the scenes also known as frames that are best for the movie and cut out all the bad ones or rather the ones that are not necessary for the movie. In today’s world women are as well known to be good editors as men. In fact some directors prefer to have a female editor because women have a more insight to how things should flow where on the other hand some male editors will try to force scenes onto the director.
Editing can now be done by almost anyone with a computer but only those with true creative skills are recognized and go on to become the senior editor on a future blockbuster film. Now editing can be done on both Mac computers and Microsoft computers also known as PC. Now on the Mac computer there are many programs that run to help edit all kinds of but the primary program that is being used by many of the big time editors is called Final Cut Pro. On the PC there is a program called Avid that does similar things that Final Cut Pro does just in a different format. In a sense it can be called that these two programs are two sides of the same coin that make up part of the editing world.
In conclusion editing is another form of fine art in the world. Like all other technologies in the world editing continues to evolve with the times. Like any form of art there is always going to be a person that will come along and create a beautiful piece of work. When it comes to making a movie editing is needed just as much now as the camera that is used to film the movie. Where as back in the old times of early movie making editors have now earned a rightful seat next to the director.
