According to the book Graffiti World, the art of vandalism is as old as cities -- from the political slogans that were scribbled on public buildings in the ancient Roman cities of Pompei and Herculaneum, to anonymous spray-can art that began to appear on city walls on the streets of New York and Philadelphia is the late 1970's. And while most of us identify graffiti with hoodlums and spray cans, it actually transfers nicely into fashion and decor (giving seemingly benign pieces a nice edgy aesthetic):
