Green and me (and you???)
07/04/2008 06:37 PM

I grew up in NH and Maine.  I was surrounded by trees, fields, ponds, a wonderful river.  We visited the ocean frequently.  I think I was born with lots of nature genes. As a young child I spent as much time as possible outdoors. In addition to watching magnificant sunrises (on my own at age 3), I helped with our gardens, I explored first our woods, and soon all the woods that would all too fast be converted into housing developments.

I raised frogs, explored tide pools, caught snakes, watched birds, walked along the river's edge, and learned to fish by age six.  I also was fairly capable in a rowboat by age 8.  We camped a lot. My roots go deep. I was an environmentalist before the word was popular.  In high school I helped organize the first Earth Day program.  We had exhibits all day long and no classes:  the school chose to open its doors to the public.  Earth Day was a big educational event.

When thinking "green" much turbulence arises within.  In 1970-71 I read what a lot of scientists predicted.  I also have watched those writer's visions come true.  I've seen small communities save rivers, while others show no respect.

Our lives become complicated, and we have only so much time to address the world's needs.  Reading new reports can become overwhelming. Will our individual efforts really accomplish the task at hand?  Nobody knows.

However if we don't participate in a vision that far exceeds individuality, we are guaranteed a very different eco-system. So here are a few strategies.  Make your own plan, and please, do publish it here. (I believe that writing does make a monumental difference.) I also believe that all of working together for the rest of our lives will matter.

1) Think globally.

2) Think regionally.

3) Act locally.

4) Find balance

5) Create your vision.  Drawings and pictures help.

6)Invite your friends, groups, and community to help.

7) Communicate.  There are no "bad guys". A group of legionares worked with local industry and polluters, and turned a dyeing river clean again. Mid70's to early 80's.

8) Grow things.

9)Believe, and teach others to do the same.

10) Write everywhere. Writing creates corridors for dreams to come true.

Now this may not be your list.  Once you have an idea of what you want to do, you can create a budget, a plan, prioritize projects for home, state, national, and international. Keep reading and finding those who share your goals. Your ideas. Your hope. Share these projects with others.

Write me and let me know what you are thinking and doing.  Never give up.  You may shift projects and goaaals, always keep wotking.

I love your suggestion to grow things. I think as a culture, we've become very detatched from the land. Some of my favorite memories are in the garden!
