We live in a society that is constantly trying to upgrade us. The average consumer is bombarded with advertisements on all the many ways to make life easier. Look you can have a phone, camera, mp3 player and the internet all in one compact machine in your hand! The down side? If you lose one you lose it all! Your pictures, contacts, music all at once out of your hands and into the hands of a “good” citizen that might return it back. So are these advertisements and businesses trying to upgrade us? Or are they really just making us lazy individuals dependent on fast and accessible information? These businesses are taking away our ability to rely on ourselves- our human nature. What about sewing with a needle and thread? What about memorizing phone numbers? What about doing math in your head? Playing sports and running outside instead of in circles and expensive machines? What about relaxing on the beach instead of a buzzing noise - could it be a text message, phone call, email or an instant message? Remember the days of letters? The joy you felt when you saw a letter in your mailbox. You appreciated the sender’s choice of paper, ink and style of handwriting. It started with a dear and ended with a love. Sometimes you would get pictures and laugh over the memories. But now it’s been “upgraded” to an attachment and quick email to say “what’s up.” Could it be we are turning into robots and losing the ability to be human more with every upgrade?
