Ever since I was a little girl, I have watched, beside my mother, the BBC hit comedy series "Absolutely Fabulous", referred to as "Ab Fab" by it's followers. While we laughed alongside Edina and Patsy Stone's hilarious physical comedy, there was much to learn from their lifestyle…
Edina is the mother of a dour child, who is plain and loves science and math. Her biggest rival is her mother's best friend, Patsy Stone. Patsy is constantly trying to get rid of Edina's daughter, and once even pays some thieves to kidnap her at the Grand Bazaar in Turkey.
Edina is the owner of a failing public relations firm, and Patsy is a notorious wanna-be star. The two of them live life to the fullest, often abusing any drug that is not legal, drinking to excess, and shopping until they fall over. The whole impetus of their life is to "strike a pose" and try to be as the show is called "absolutely fabulous."
My mother often told me, "suffer for beauty", when she wore her high heels that made her ankles bleed occasionally or went for one of her facial peels that stung. I understood this at a young age, but Patsy and Edina really take this idea to the edge! They will do anything to be the "it" thing. To them, the world is all about fashion, and if they had actually taken the time about of their busy shopping regiments to register to vote, they would vote Roberto Cavalli to be the next president. And their vice-president would be the spectre of the late "Coco" Chanel. Edina's main obsession is with the styles of LaCroix, and she can't get enough of their garments.
Their days are spent avoiding Edina's daughter and frolicking down the main shopping streets of London. Edina receives heavy paychecks from her two ex-husbands who she finds very suitable as her "income bolsterers." With this money she buys a luxurious flat in "Woodland Hills", a 1.5 million dollar flat that she flatly states to the press if asked, and insists that it is int he middle of Woodland, not on the "edge". Edina hires a full- time driver of a brand new lovely Jaguar, and hires people to take pictures to put her and Patsy in the papers.
Although Patsy wants to radiate an image of being a fashionista, she is often seen on the covers of magazines drunk, stoned, or having an affair with some famous politician. While her reckless sexual exploits, shopping sprees, binge drinking, and drug-habit techniques fail at providing a proper role model for young girls, she does manage to look her best at all times.
Patsy always has her hair done and makeup done no matter what time of day; asleep or awake, drunk, stoned, or high off of some other illegal narcotic. Patsy always tries to escape the reality of her sordid life by engaging in some sort of fantasy play. This often consists of wearing the most expensive designer suits she can afford or borrow, and getting as much plastic surgery as she can afford. Now, I think we all need to take her with a heavy dose of salt, but she does have a lot to offer in her lifestyle and methods of living…
She will let nothing get in the way of her looking absolutely fabulous, nothing…. she won't let money get in her way (because she either borrows money from Edina, or finds some other means of buying beautiful, stylish clothing). She will also stop at nothing to keep her beautiful face of youth, which we all should try to do, (obviously) with a bit of acceptance of aging as a sign of wisdom and life experiences gained. But, she will always have her fashion style… she was always the one photographed at every party and event for having the "it" fashion of the moment. She always tried her best. No one could fault her for lack of trying or effort.
Edina, while a horrible mess, and a sordid disarray, would often be cited in the papers as "bloody ridiculous", or some other means of degradation to her wardrobe. She often mistakes brand names for "style." She fails to put things together that suit one another and often crosses plaids with prints and flowers with plaids, etc. She regularly gets body wrappings in order to shrink her figure, and will go to ANY means to make herself appear more attractive. I personally wouldn't go to such extravagant means as smoking to avoid gaining weight or possibly becoming skinny, using cocaine to lose a few pounds, etc., but Edina still retains her fashion sense and sometimes, sanity. She often puts together an odd array of styles or prints, but again, no one can fault her for lack of trying…
What I really want to say, is don't let anything: children, work, responsibilities, age, time, etc. get in your way of being and looking the best you can be, which is "ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS." You should always show off your best asset… whether that be your rotund derriere, your fabulous shoulders, or your flat chest (such is the case with me!), or your favorite set of jewels that your grandmother gave you!
Always strive to be the next "it" thing, even if you aren't. This is the way to live life. Ever since I was a child, I have imagined there was a video camera constantly capturing every essence of my being, that includes my presence, my attitude, my behavior, and obviously, how I look! When you are this narcissistic and obviously self-engrossed, you have to look good!
But really, a little bit of a delusional disorder that you are famous, or about to be famous, or even should-be famous, or are a wannabe.....isn't all that bad! Just choose the proper celebs to follow and don't become the next girl shown in a leopard suit with sagging boobs and a belly on the cover of USWeekly. Embrace the latest trends, don't dismiss them for being too avant garde, showy, flashy, racy, etc. Embrace them in the best way that you can and integrate them into your wardrobe. If you have a certain style, ie; classy, conservative, then embrace Chanel and Armani. If you want to be on the cutting edge go for Dior or Prada! Just be absolutely fabulous, I can't say it enough, in whatever you do, and remember, always remember, there is always a camera on you! Yes you! Just as Patsy and Edina do!
