The vain pursuit of defining beauty...

12/15/2007 11:41 PM

Beauty, beauty, beauty, what is beauty? It seems like the question of society, the existential dilemma that we all must face whether it be aesthetic, moral, or nature. There is beauty in everything, undeniably, but to define beauty is a vain attempt at defining a word and an idea in its very existence is subjective. All ratings of beauty of humans for example is based and biased on stereotypical prejudices based on race, origin, and nationality. There is Asian beauty, there is an Arian beauty, there is an African-American beauty… but this is not beauty DEFINED, these are the societally created and constructed ideas of beauty for the following groups and nationalities.

In recent articles and magazines there has been a trend of getting away from the superficial aspect of beauty and going for a more internal and more spiritual meaning of the word. First let's ask ourselves how the world defines beauty or what is the recognized definition of "beauty"

Beauty is commonly defined as a characteristic present in a person, place, object or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, meaning or satisfaction to the mind or to the eyes, arising from sensory manifestations such as a shape, color, personality, sound, design or rhythm.[1] Beauty is studied as part of aesthetics, sociology, social psychology and culture. Beauty, as a cultural creation, is also extremely commercialized. ( www. wikipedia.com) wikipedia.com)

Beauty has been philosophized, created, manipulated, and artistically and existentially debated ever since the beginning of mankind. To define beauty is once again an impossible task to begin with. But there is one thing we can all agree on, there is beauty in everything if we see it for its inherent value. Every person has beauty somewhere, some deep-seated part of them is beautiful in its own right. Food is beautiful, nature is beautiful, God's creation of the universe is beautiful in its own right.

My definition of beauty would have to go back to what we want to get away from, but what is the point about arguing about what it means to everyone anymore? because, the questions is, what it means to me, personally. I see beauty in the differences, the disparity between me and others. If I were to ascertain and circumcise beauty to human models and look at people and their traits, I see differences as the most beautiful thing in the world.

For example, I have an Asian boyfriend, I personally love his eyes. His dark, almost black eyes, are so brown and oblong in nature and have a Cleopatra-like extension to the ends that is reminiscent of his pure-blooded Chinese heritage. I see it in his family and see the generations passing down their traits in a beautiful array of genetics and DNA unraveling into a beautiful matrix of a person.

I see the black woman with her dreads or braids and her dark color as beauty. I love the color of African-Americans and often try to imitate it by tanning my dark skin. It is funny how we Caucasians don't realize how we try to emulate other cultures, we tan, we exercise our butts to have larger figures, we either pale our skin and even it out or use bronzer to look of a different color. We plump our lips with collagen to define our beauty that other nationalities have, we stretch our necks to make them look longer, we do all these things to capture a beauty that is not our own, somehow foreign, somehow alien, yet beautiful to us, because it is DIFFERENT.

Beauty is defined in the era. At one time being large, rotund rather, and curvy and fleshy and white waas beautiful because that meant that you were not a commoner working in the fields and you were rich because you had plenty of food to eat. That changed when people could travel to warm places and receive a tan in their free time when they weren't working and they could be thin because they didn't have to eat so much, because food waas not a scarcity anymore and was a vestige to be picked at by thin women.

Detracting from the topic then, how do we define beauty, I guess you just have to ask yourself, what is beauty to you? Beauty can be seen in the bar of soap you hold in the shower and the simplicity of cleansing yourself, to the fall of a leaf on an August day, to the teardrops going down your face when you are happy or sad. Beuaty is everywhere, beauty is everything, you just have to look for it. Looking for beauty is something that people need to do in order to feel happier and to really improve their lives. If one goes around seeing the lack of beauty in everything, I can imagine their attitude must not be very good. So see the beauty in everyday things, like your bar of Dial soap, or your heritage, or the differences in you and other people. Look all around you… beauty is everywhere… just dare to see it..
