How many fashionistas does it take to save the earth?
The ultimate trend for 2008 is going to be eco-friendly fashion. Today's society, more than ever, is promoting a "green" lifestyle. "Going green" consists of using less energy, saving water, carpooling, recycling, and planting trees. For all of us fashionistas out there, we can still wear trendy clothes, but we can help the environment at the same time! Eco-friendly fabrics are becoming more popular; these fabrics include organic cotton, inego fibers, hemp, recycled polyester, corn fiber, and even bamboo.
THe difference between the fabrics you see on most mannequins in a window display at the shopping malls, and eco-friendly fabric is the way it is grown. Fibers are traditionally grown with synthetic chemicals to speed up the growth. But wait- pesticides are also used to prevent pests from eating the fibers! Organic fibers are grown naturally- no chemicals or pesticides.
Elisa Jimenez, and Brooklyn Industries are just some of the designers and companies starting to use these renewable fabrics.
So to answer my question above- just one fashionista. I hope that this little article inspires at least one person to look into the trend of eco-fashion and how just one person can help the environment by choosing organic grown fabrics.
