London 2012 is planned to be to be the first ‘sustainable’ Olympics Games, setting new standards for major events. Being ‘sustainable’ means thinking about peoples’ current and long-term needs, improving quality of life and ensuring a healthy and thriving natural environment.
The focus of the London 2012 Games will be the Olympic Park in east London, which will house the new sport venues. The Park is located in the Lower Lea Valley and is an area of great untapped potential.
After the Games the area will be transformed into the largest urban park created in Europe for more than 150 years. The Olympic Stadium will seat 80,000 and will be the main venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. All Athletics events will take place in the Stadium as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, watched by millions of people around the world.
After the Games the Stadium will be converted to a 25,000 seat Athletics stadium, providing a lasting legacy with a range of facilities available for elite competitors and the local community.
I'm excited to see a sustainable project in this scale taking place. Not sure how green the China Olympics would be, but London is definitely setting up a standard for the future developments.
