After discussing convertible store designs (Retail Makeover: Uniqlo), I started noticing retail makeover trends popping up like tulips after Easter.
This time it’s all about the relocation. I remember the Nike store in Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the early 2000. It was something everyone knew about, but wasn’t sure where it was. An unmarked door led to a bouncer that opened the gate to unmarked designs. It was Nike’s way to be cool again.
But who needs unmarked doors when an exact address is a google-second away (including the exact GPS coordinates and a photo)? That’s when the 5th avenue flag stores figured they can put a spin on their high-paying-rent-locations and throw big celeb parties in their boutiques. (i.e. Kanye West’s birthday party at Louis Vuitton)
In the days when Brooklyn is the new 30’s and Museums are the new black, we can comfortably combine our passion for shopping while expanding our cultural horizons. The combination was obvious all along. The small gift shops at the museum have been a crucial stop for cute memorabilia, books, posters, or funky Van Gogh magnets. Now you can shop for exclusive designs by your favorite brand.
The collaboration between the Brooklyn Museum and Louis Vuitton is offered now through July 13th. The museum is hosting a retrospective Murakami show and LV will have exclusive handbags, wallets, and clutches in the new monogram print.
Relocating across the river into a museum as a tribute might just be the new retail makeover trend.
