Memorial Day is special.
I recall the wreath that was tossed into the river to honor those who died at sea. This was the beginning of the ceremony.
Following was the early morning parade. I remember, in particular, the flags, the veterans, and the intense pride I felt toward our country. I would get "teary" with my hand over my heart as flags and floats passed. I would be "choked up" and couldn't speak. Not everybody with me would understand this. We would follow the parade to the cemetery. Part of that tradition was a twenty-one gun salute. We were generally standing in the beauty of Spring and the safety of our small town.
I couldn't imagine the sacrifice given by the men and women who were passing by. I couldn't fathom the ultimate sacrifice of someone giving their life for me so I could live in freedom. It still takes my breath away.
I applaud every serviceman and woman. I applaud your families. I thank you for your gift to me. It is beyond words.
