Get the Look: Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2008
05/12/2008 05:33 PM
We loved the spring 2008 Marc by Marc Jacobs runway show, from the soft neckties to the vibrant colors, so we’ve rounded up the key styles and their affordable counterparts. Even if you’re on a tight budget, you can still get "the Marc" look.

The most notable trend was the vest with necktie. Whether he threw the cropped vest on top of a shift dress or sweater, the simultaneously fitted and voluminous item stood out among all the rest. Try replicating the look by nabbing a vest and an oblong scarf of the same shade, and wear them together. Wet Seal has several vest options, but the Back Bow Vest and Tuxedo Vest ($16.50 each) in particular closely follow the cropped Marc style . We also dig the perfect khaki color of this Silence & Noise Coated Canvas Vest ($48, Urban Outfitters). Tie a lightweight scarf -- made from silk, or very thin cotton or voile -- into a loose, floppy bow. This Linen-Blend Scarf ($14.50, Old Navy) is a great option, while Urban Outfitters has a wide selection of styles, depending on your vest’s color. Then, wear your vest over either this coral Eva Knit Dress ($34.50, dELiA’s) or this Aimee Keyhole Top ($13.80, Forever 21) in order to style the outfit in the likeness of Marc.

Fluffy neckties also made their way onto silk blouses, specifically a polkadot top. That’s because sophisticated spots were big on the Marc Jacobs runway. Think of large polkadots, rather than girlish pin-size dots or medium circles. Our favorite incarnation of the sophisticated spots was on the pictured dress, and the Circle Ring Neck Dress ($26.99, Target) employs the same style. Other dresses were also on display, with the same structured hourglass silhouette, but in navy, dark denim, and citron yellow -- the latter of which is popular this season overall. This Isaac Mizrahi for Target Andrea Wrap Dress in Egg Yolk ($44.99, Target) is the perfect shape and matching hue.

Marc’s color palette of brights and deep navy was perfectly suited for contrast, colorblocked knits that felt a bit retro. To replicate the look, find a sweater or blouse that lays flat and employs two colors – one on the bodice and the other on the placket, neckline, and (if you can find it), pockets. The Cashmere Martine Cardigan ($188, J.Crew) hits all three of those details, and the heather graphite style is tinged in Marc’s spring yellow.

Finally, Marc inserted a little trompe l’oeil (literally meaning "trick the eye") into his collection with a sweater that had a necktie knit into the fabric. Who needs to accessorize with a scarf when it’s already built into the design? Both this Sim Collar Sweater and Polkadot Bow Top ($22.80 and $14.80, respectively; both at Forever 21) are perfect ways to try the trend yourself.

Marc by Marc Jacobs has always been one of our favorite designer labels, and we particularly loved the spring styles. Now with our affordable selections, anyone can get the look!
