So yesterday over on Ivillage's Beauty & Style page I saw an article that the 80s styles are coming back.
In fact, it always seems some style is coming back. I see sites where women make custom dresses based on patterns from the 1940s and 1950s. Some designer is always trying to bring back the 1960s. And now that it's long enough ago to be seen as retro, the 1980s are making a comeback.
So why not the 1970s?
I'm not saying that the 70s were the greatest decade, but they sure where better then the 80s and 90s. Better commercals for one thing. The Hustle is far superior to break dancing. Disco music rules.
I've heard the 70s described as "the era of bad taste" and sure it's far from perfect. However I think that's because too many people are looking at the patterns on the clothes, not the cut and shape.
The fact is, once you get past the big, ugly patterns and look at how the outfit is cut, it's really quite cute. The best part is you looked like your gender, even in pants. Men looked like men, women looked like women. Not like today's clothing where you really can't tell which gender a shirt is made for.
Feathered hair is awesome too. If I could actually style my hair I'd totally go for a feathered look, only without the hair on my forehead. (I break out too easily as it is. Hair on my forehead only makes it worse.)
Now I'm not saying that the 70s were the perfect decade. I'm just saying it seems to be an over looked decade. But it is the decade that brought us children's programing like The Electric Company and the music of people like Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond.
I also have an affinity for the 70s since I was born in 1976. And yes, I know that means I don't remember much of it. I do, however, remember enough to know I prefer it to the 1980s.
I'm just sad that the 70s always gets over looked. Really, ignore the ugly patterns on the material of the clothes. Look past that. And see how the cuts and shapes are. You can bring the 70s back without bringing back the entire decade.
