The destruction of The Soaps

Daytime to Primetime
Daytime to Primetime
We all grew up with them...

General Hospital was the (#1) soap in the 80's thanks to Luke and Laura. Holly and Robert...Felicia and Frisc and I could go one to Soony and Brenda...Carly and Lorenzo and Lorenzo and Skye but enough of the name dropping.

GL has been on for over 55 years, As THe World Turns even longer thanks to radio.

But ever since I would have to say since the late 90's and early 2000's and the networks have gone corporte the soaps have gone to the gutter. The storylines going no where, the relationships bust before they even begin. Core characters gone for good. Can you think of GH without the Quartermaines?

Well it has become a reality. So many top tier stars starred on a soap opera and even though the current crop of daytime vets don't sign lengthy long term contracts they still go on to do bigger and better things.

The new Night Rider movie on NBC stars an alumni of All My Children.

Look at television shows from Las Vegas to Dirty Sexy Money and they are sprinkled with soap stars so no one can not say that they don't have a reason to exist.

So why ruin them? It's all about the bottom line I would suppose, the audience has eroded.

The Young and The Restless (#!1) since I believe 1992 and even there share in households are below a 4.5 now. Here is what I see they have gone wrong. They are not staying true to what the creators long ago set into stone.

There is no movement and when it is it's sporadic and doesn't make any sense at all.

GH is now killing the Jones/Scorpio family off and they have ties to the show since the 1980's when Felicia was introduced.

Head writers don't know anything about what they are doing as they are passed around from soap to soap.

GH does so much stunt casting like bringing back Holly/Robert/Anna for a mere 7 weeks when they could have done so much more.

Carly/Sonny/Jason do not own Port Charles as Sonny is the most ill conceived character ever introduced. Sure he will never go on to primetime success that Vanessa Barrett has gone on to but why circle the long term prospects around a mobster and everyone else pays the price for his actions. In the end will Sonny go to a coffeeshop and the show fade to black.

Speaking of diversity where is it anf why when it is showcased they are only supporting cast members?

No soap is without there issues as Bold and The Beautiful had a chance to alter Brooke into a woman and turned her back into the lame character she has always been only to come between Taylor/NIck and for how long; like a week?

It's so sad movies stars like Liz Taylor once raved about soap operas and how they where introduced to show the world a different way of entertaining but they have gone to the garbage never to return to there former glory.

Primetime soaps has achance with Dirty Sexy Money, Gossip Girl and the now cancelled Big Shops that had a cast full of ex-Daytime vets so maybe that Dynasty The Next Generation script I have at home may come in handy after all. Paging Payton List, Emma Samms, Nia Long.
