It wasn’t hard to guess the inspiration behind Alexandre Herchcovitch’s spring 2009 collection. Titled “Army of Love,” the dominant theme was that of a strongly militaristic look punctuated by a few frilly patterns and ruffled outfits.
Herchcovitch’s soldier-woman was evoked in outfits with cargo pockets, brass buttons, high collars and strong shoulders accented with epaulettes. The show’s focus extended beyond foreign political turmoil and strife to include a decidedly worldly and international outlook. Ottoman army uniforms were the inspiration for the silhouettes while the prints used in several of the looks referred to Middle Eastern tapestries.
The bellicosity of the army inspired dresses and separates was offset by feminine ruffles that often appeared in unexpected places, producing a surprising contrast. Fabrics such as silk georgette with lace and embroidery added another element of femininity and grace. The collection gives women the option to be strong and sexy, arming them with the clothes they need to brave any social encounter.
