Vivienne Tam chose to escape the Bryant Park tents this season and use her SOHO store as a main stage for her fashion presentation, which included signature red and purple frocks with cut outs and a dozen TouchSmart HP computers. It was a pure celebration for the geek fashionistas who were very much in presence that night.
Based on the concept of “nothingness”, a space in which anything can happen, Vivienne Tam’s Fall 2009 collection spotlighted rich jewel tones (think the designer’s signature red, deep purple and teal) and neutrals, along with a keen mixing of textures and layering of fabrics. The Chinese character for “nothingness” - “wu” - was a theme featured in several collection pieces and when repeated as a sound, it becomes an effective mantra. The core of Tam’s inspiration comes from a belief that when there is uncertainty in the cosmos, only an empty heart and clear mind lead to purity.
We were lucky to catch up with the designer and ask her few burning questions about her inspiration, the new presentation format, new technology and oh well... the new times for the fashion industry. Watch the interview.
