Music made by girls...the new generation12/09/2007 10:59 AM | Music made by girls...the new ...
OK...This is going to sound terrible but I never was a fan of girls in the music business. I know I should be more supportive of my gender but I was always terrified of the thin loud voices. I'm not saying they are all bad, of course there were Janis Joplin and another few but girls in rock always were always connected with the terrible cliche in the lyrics, guitars and vocals. I can't stand them. The 80's were the starters for girls but I don't think Cindy Lauper and the B 52's contributed much for music. And the 90's weren't much of a help with Cranberries and other band like them. Girls usually put a fake rock attitude or talk about love but to make the theme more rockn' roll they pretend to be tougher than they really are. Girls seemed fated to be divas of pop, what's wrong in being divas of pop? Divas of pop don't create they just take songs with the same feeling and compete between each other to see who hits the higher note. Lately I've been proven wrong because two new singers have taken the world, or maybe just the UK by storm. Lily Allen and her protege Kate Nash combine attitude with music. Some people say that her voices aren't strong enough but the same critics don't seem to think that a man needs to hit higher notes to be a great artist, Pete Doherty and Kurt Cobain can't be considered great singer but they are considered great artists and women earned this spot after so long singing in annoyingly thin voices. The two new singers talk about love in a modern point of view, they aren't trying to be tougher than they really are, they are feminine and admit theit vulnerability but they also demonstrate how sick girls are of guys that think too much of themselves. Bottom line, they show the real feeling of young women, because it can exist a balance between the angry woman that Alanis Morissete were in the beginning of her career with the fragil, innocent girls that pop is always looking for. Real life girls drink, cry, love, hate, are a bit messy some times and look like a princess in a dress in others. I think Kate Nash, Lily Allen and in a different formate Amy Winehouse can make women real artists in the business and not only a groupie that got lucky in front a microphone.

They are not just pretty faces made into stars by producers. Amy Winehouse is a whole another league of course, she is one of those singers that you see once in few generations. What makes me concerned is the media surrounding them and the way they deal (or can't deal) with it... I can't wait for their next albums to see where these girls go with their music.

I'm tired of all of the Nickelback-sounding generic rock bands getting all the attention. While I love Amy Winehouse's music, she's unfortunately a train wreck and if she doesn't get real help soon and lose the husband, she'll self destruct. You can also include KT Tunstall on your list, as she is a great performer and writes her own songs. I think Fergie has proved she, too, can carry the workload without the ensemble of The Black Eyed Peas. So, come on gals...you rock! Bring it on!
