I discovered soap nuts about a year ago and never looked back since, they are the ultimate household cleansing product. They clean clothes, hair, floors, worktops, anything really.

You can add essential oils to make up your own cleansing products, i.e. Lavender is very relaxing so wash nightware and bedding in soap-nuts with a few drops of oil added.

Eucalyptus is antibacterial so good to use for floors worktops and bathroom.

Here is a list of oils to add and their uses:

Lavender oil has a floral aroma with a hint of woodiness. Lavender oil is one of the most versatile (therapeutically)of all the essential oils,it is antiseptic, soothing & relaxing for the body & mind. A must for anyone starting to use essential oils. Blends with Bergamot, Citronella, Clary Sage, Lemon,Mandarin, Orange, Patchouli,Thyme, Rosemary & Ylang Ylang.

- Good to use on bedding and nightwear to relax and unwind.

 

Tea Tree has been used extensively by the Aboriginal people for centuries, for its antiseptic & anti-bacterial properties. Tea Tree has a sharp, clean aroma. Tea Tree is widely used in Aromatherapy, due to its wide range of therapeutic properties. A recommended oil for those new to using essential oils. A useful insect repellent, use in an oil burner or room spray with other insect repellent oils to deter flies & other flying insects from your home. Blends with Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Ginger, Lavender, Lemon, Mandarin, Orange, Peppermint, Rosemary & Thyme.

- Good to add to liquid soap for household cleaning, or use with to make a anti head lice shampoo, in greenhouse spray.

 

Eucalyptushas a light, refreshing aroma, with a sweet,woody note. Eucalyptus has been used for centuries by the Aboriginal people for its antiseptic properties. Eucalyptus Globulus is commonly known as Blue Gum Eucalyptus. Use in a room spray to deter flies & keep your home smelling fresh. Eucalyptus oil can be helpful in removing tar from skin & clothing. Blends with Basil,Citronella, Frankincense,Ginger,Lavender, Lemon,Sweet Marjoram, Peppermint,Tea Tree & Thyme.

- Good for house hold cleaning, anti- bacterial, or for soiled clothing/nappies, in greenhouse spray. Used in oil burners it kills airborne bacteria.

 

Lemonhas a sharp,fresh citrus aroma & is refreshing & uplifting. Lemon oil is a useful addition to your household cleaning kit, due to its anti-bacterial properties. Add a few drops onto a damp cleaning cloth to wipe down kitchen surfaces & to eliminate unpleasant odours in your refrigerator. Leaves a clean, fresh aroma. Blends with Bergamot, Eucalyptus,Frankincense, Ginger,Lavender,Rosemary, Sandalwood & Ylang Ylang.

- Good for refreshing clothes and household cleaner for freshness, especially fridges.

 

Orange oil has a refreshing, citrus aroma. The aroma can convey feelings of happiness & joy.

Children especially like the aroma of Orange oil & can be relaxing before bedtime. A good oil for those new to using essential oils. Blends with Bergamot, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Sandalwood & Ylang Ylang.

- Good for uplifting scent on clothing and household cleaner. Relaxing at bedtime.

 

Grapefruit oil, Feeling 'down in the dumps' or lethargic? Inhaling Grapefruit oil can invigorate & refresh. Grapefruit is uplifting, a happy oil with a light, refreshing, citrus aroma. Unlike other citrus oils,Grapefruit is not a photo sensitiser,making it a useful addition in skin care preparations which can be used when the skin will be exposed to sunlight. A good oil to add to detoxing massage blends. Blends with Basil, Bergamot, Citronella, Frankincense,Geranium,Ginger, Lavender,Orange,Rosemary & Ylang Ylang.

- Refreshing and uplifting for clothes washing, household cleanser and on the skin.

 

Here is some further information about soap nuts that you may find useful:

They, of course, are completely natural and do not harm the environment. No chemicals to irritate the skin and they are also a mild insecticide. Benefits people with eczema, acne and head lice repellent.

Laundry: Use in the washing machine in small, bag etc. inside drum.

Place 6-8 nuts inside bag. The nuts are odourless so add essential oils to fabric softener compartment to add fragrance if required.

Soap nuts can be used 3-4 times depending on water temperature. Soap nuts will gradually get less effective so a new batch is advisable with a heavy soiled wash.

250g= 30-40 washes, 500g= 60-80 washes + liquid soap.

Making Liquid Soap:

Before adding to compost heap soap nuts can be boiled for 5 mins, and strained, to get an all purpose liquid soap. This can be repeated several times until all soap is extracted.

This soap can be used for:

Washing delicate hand wash items,

Washing dishes and glasses,

Washing hands,

Washing Hair, head lice repellent,

Screen Wash in Cars,

Plant Spray to Deter Greenfly and Aphids, General Garden Spray.

General All Purpose Wash.,

Cleaning Jewellery
