Yesterday, I went to New York for the first time in my life. Yes, I'm 20 years old and it took me that long to get to New York. Anyway, I was really impressed with Jackson Heights, an indian neighborhood in Queens. With my tour guides Nabeel, the president of the International Student Association and Jim, the PR guy of the International Student Association, I was able to discover this world of grand embroidery and satin. The first thing I noticed was a beautiful display of two traditional indian outfits. Nabeel even showed me how to wrap a scarf around my head and also explained to me the specifics about the clothing that the Indian women were wearing. Also, I read an indian fashion magazine (well, I looked at the pictures) and I saw these fierce women modeling various designs. An awkward moment came when a man called out, “Hey, you. You look like a model. You should go see what’s inside.” So, I went in along with Nibeel and Jim. I had no idea it was like an upscale boutique where they have a person wait on you. However, the clothes were gorgeous and seeing a man stitching a piece together on my way out was worth the walk in. Even though, I couldn’t afford one thing in there. Now, I want to find out more about the indian fashion industry.
